Overview
Summary
The initial business need was to move the current app framework over to a React Native framework due to security reasons. For users, the app was outdated and faced significant usability and accessibility issues.
Results
➕ We have seen a 5% increase in downloads, supporting our goal to grow the app by 20% annually.
➕ 10% increase in users setting goals with our compass tool.
⌚️ Decreased development time by 1 quarter due to the simplification that came out of my audits
Framing the problem
For the business:
For security reasons, the existing mobile app needed to be migrated off of Appcelerator and onto React. The app also didn't reflect the TransUnion rebranding because legacy code was painful to work on.
For the User:
There were many complaints about the usability of the app and it's appearance was not instilling trust into the user because of it's outdated appearance.

Process
Approach 🧭
The strategy was to focus on maintaining the app's core functionality while enhancing its usability and accessibility and applying brand standards. We conducted a heuristic evaluation and user testing sessions to identify key usability issues. Additionally, we reviewed accessibility standards to ensure the new design met industry requirements. Collaboration with the development team was crucial to align the design with technical constraints and capabilities.
Challenges 🚨
The main hurdle was stakeholder alignment. Technology, product, marketing, and brand all had requirements, and we had to communicate our design decisions effectively.
Solution 💚
To address the problem, we developed a cohesive design that balanced the requirements from technology, product, marketing, and brand teams. We held regular cross-functional meetings to ensure everyone was aligned and informed about design decisions. After initial alignment, we created Jobs To Be Done, defined UI components, and documented them. By maintaining open communication and documenting our design choices, we were able to gain stakeholder buy-in and move forward with a unified vision.
